Chip said that this can only be a miracle because OB had no pulse!
On Saturday, April 6, 2024, around 4 p.m., Chip and OB were playing basketball game at Canton High School junior with six other players, mostly teenagers. OB and Chip were guarding each other during the game.
As we went up for a rebound, OB secured the ball and turned to head up the court. He passed the ball and started to run, but suddenly collapsed. He went straight down, and Chip was close by when it happened.
Before collapsing, OB showed no signs of distress. Chip was in close contact, and he didn’t complain of any medical issues. He was running up and down the court just fine, and they had been speaking just seconds before.
Once he collapsed, Chip rushed over to him. With the help of some kids, Chip turned him over on his side and then onto his back. Chip yelled for help, but most of the juveniles in the gym were frozen, unsure of what to do. Chip shouted for them to go get help and call 911.
Chip administered first aid to OB, who was gasping for air and making strange noises. He was still breathing at the time and appeared to have a small seizure. While trying to find his pulse, Audrey and Evan arrived to assist. Audrey instructed Chip to turn OB on his side and placed a device on his finger to measure his pulse. She brought out a breath mask and an oxygen bottle. Chip held the mask over OB’s mouth but noticed the bag wasn’t filling with air, and there was no condensation inside the mask.
Audrey attempted to find a pulse on OB’s neck, and Chip tried to find one on his wrist, but neither of them could detect a pulse. The finger device wasn’t working either. OB had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.
They decided to start CPR. Evan began chest compressions while Audrey bagged OB. Chip took over bagging so Audrey could secure the mask tightly over OB’s lips.
We performed CPR for what felt like an eternity. Someone produced an AED, which was later revealed to be the police officer’s own device. We activated the AED at least twice, causing OB to convulse with the electric shock. At this point, Chip was bagging OB, Evan was doing compressions, and Audrey held the bag tightly to OB’s mouth.
An officer arrived with another AED and relieved Evan from doing compressions. Audrey, the officer, and Chip continued giving OB CPR. The AED was used several more times, this time by the officer. We continued CPR until the paramedics arrived and took over.
Chip moved to the other side of the curtain while they worked on OB. This story is incomplete without hearing about how Faith, OB’s mother, rallied Brightmoor Church to pray for OB. And OB found his pulse again!!!
