About Us

GET TO KNOW BRIGHTMOOR

MISSION

To Reach the Lost, Disciple the Found

Brightmoor has a rich heritage from humble beginnings. Our roots go back to the year 1926 when Alonzo Bates, and his wife, Zula, started the church on the second floor of a pool hall in downtown Redford. The church held large tent meetings filled with people giving their hearts to the Lord. Brightmoor became established and grew under the leadership of Pastor Alonzo Bates. After his early and sudden death, it was Zula Bates who became the pillar of strength to continue the vision God had given Alonzo for our church. Through her hard work, faith, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication, she saw the church survive and eventually thrive.

In 1933, Rev. Bond Bowman felt called at the age of 23 to pastor a church in Detroit, and he remained the pastor of Brightmoor for 43 years. In 1976, Tom Trask succeeded him as pastor, and he remained until 1988 when he was elected General Treasurer of the Assemblies of God. Brightmoor had the honor of other lead pastors until our current Senior Pastor, Jamie Kjos, was elected in August 2005. Brightmoor leadership has been favored and blessed for the past 98 years.

From the Brightmoor District… to Southfield… to Novi… Brightmoor has been a beacon of hope for the people living in the surrounding communities and beyond the metro Detroit area.

CORE VALUES

We strive to create an atmosphere of a family where singles, married, and people of all ages and races can choose to belong.

John 13:34-35, 1 Corinthians 13, Galatians 3:26-28

The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct. Our church should be culturally relevant while remaining doctrinally sound. Culture conforms to Biblical teaching.

1 Thessalonians 2:13, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:21

We believe excellence honors God and inspires people.

Galatians 6:9-10, Colossians 3:23

We believe lost people matter to God, and therefore, they matter to our church.

Matthew 18:14, Luke 5:30–32, Luke 15

We believe that continual life transformation happens best in community.

Luke 6:12–13, Acts 2:44–47, 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Our church should live as a unified community of servants, with everybody stewarding their spiritual gifts.

Psalm 133:1, Malachi 3:10, Matthew 6:19-21, Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, 1 Corinthians 14, Ephesians 4

Our church is committed to influencing the next generation, knowing that our dreams are bigger than our memories. As the next generation grows, we will equip them to mature spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Doing this the church will outlive us.

Deuteronomy 4:9, Judges 2:10, 1 Timothy 4:12

We believe our church should be led by people with God-given leadership gifts. Our responsibility is to discover and develop the current and future leaders of our church.

Nehemiah 1, Nehemiah 2, Acts 6:2-5, Romans 12:8, 1 Corinthians 11:1, 2 Timothy 2:2

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe the Bible is God’s Word. It is accurate, authoritative, and applicable to our everyday lives.

We believe in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy. The Lord Jesus Christ is both God and man and is the only one who can reconcile us to God. Each time we partake of communion we remember Jesus lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.

We believe sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives. In order to receive forgiveness, we must repent of our sins, believe in Jesus Christ, and submit to His will for our lives. God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and powerful lives in order to help others more effectively. In order to live the holy, fruitful, and power-filled lives God intends for us, we need to be baptized in water, set our mind on Him and His purpose, and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

We believe God has individually equipped us and corporately gathered us as His living body. We do this so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives, which is to worship God, strengthen the Church, and share the Gospel with the community in which we live.

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised and will rule and reign on this earth. History will conclude as the wicked are judged and the righteous enter a new heaven and a new earth.
